  • Cristiano Ronaldo did not fly back home after Portugal's elimination from the FIFA World Cup by Morocco
  • The Portuguese FA announced that only 14 players will head back home after their heartbreaking elimination
  • Ronaldo had a difficult tournament after he was dropped to the bench for Portugal's last two games

Cristiano Ronaldo is among Portugal's players who have opted to remain in Qatar following their elimination from the World Cup.

Portugal were shocked by Morocco on December 10 as a solo strike from Youssef En-Nesyri ensured that an African team qualified for the semifinals for the very first time.

The captain was dropped by Head Coach Fernando Santos for the round of 16 tie against Switzerland and the quarter-final match against Atlas Lions.

Daily Mail now reports that Ronaldo is part of close to 10 members of the Portugal team that have opted to remain in Qatar as the rest of the team flew back home. The decision was okayed by the Portuguese FA.

Who else remained in Qatar?

The report further states that Bernardo Silva, Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot, Ruben Neves, Rui Patricio, Raphael Guerreiro, Rafael Leao, Joao Cancelo and Matheus Nunes are the other players who will go back home at a separate time.

Ronaldo is now expected to look for a new club following the termination of his contract by Manchester United. Saudi Arabia club Al Nassr had been rumoured to have placed a deal for the former Real Madrid striker.

Ronaldo reveals why he cried

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Cristiano Ronaldo has broken his silence after Portugal was eliminated from Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup yesterday.

Portugal crumbled to a 1-0 loss to African nation Morocco who became the first African country to reach the semi-final of the World Cup.

The 37-year-old affirmed his commitment to the national team after he made his 196th appearance yesterday. Ronaldo was pictured in tears as he left the pitch after seeing his dream of winning the World Cup come to an end in possibly his last World Cup. He would be 41 at the next World Cup
