  • AS Roma blew their top-four chances in Serie A with a goalless draw against Bologna
  • Jose Mourinho named a rotated side filled with Primavera players due to injury woes
  • The Special One has been a motivator this season but admitted there were struggles

AS Roma and Bologna played out to a goalless draw in the Serie A, but the result was more damaging for the capital club than their opponents.

Jose Mourinho’s side has been battling a challenging task, which has now been made impossible by recent results - qualification for the UEFA Champions League next season.

Roma won the UEFA Europa Conference League last season to qualify for the Europa League this season, and may now have to rely on the same route to be eligible for the Champions League.

A heavily-rotated Roma squad, which included Primavera players due to injuries to first-team stars, could not get past a team managed by Thiago Motta, Mourinho’s former player.

Mourinho makes shocking Roma admission

According to Football Italia, the Giallorossi only spent €7 million on transfers in the summer window: Zeki Celik was the only player paid for. Other signings, including Paulo Dybala, were obtained as a free agent or via loan.

This is taking its toll on the team close to the end of the season. They are still involved in the top-four battle, as well as the semi-final of the UEFA Europa League, with the second leg still to come against Bayer Leverkusen.

After the Bologna game, Mourinho clarified matters to the fans, saying he hoped to match their expectations with reality but also claiming the club was not currently equipped to fight 'a battle on two fronts'.

“The fans have to listen to me, when we were third or second I always said we were thinking game after game. I always said that we didn’t have the potential to play till the end of two competitions. I’ve been saying this here for two to three months,” he said, as quoted by GIFN.

Rivals, Lazio only need a win from their final three games to end Roma’s hopes and force the team to focus on winning the cup competition as an alternative route to Champions League football next season.

Mourinho inspires Primavera side

Sports Brief reported that Mourinho inspired the Primavera side to victory over Fiorentina after they were a goal down at half-time.

The former Chelsea boss spent his off day with the youth team and while their manager was suspended, stepped in to give a team talk.
