South Africa has its third gold medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Golden girl Tatjana Schoenmaker grabbed the gold as she dominated the Women’s 200m Breaststroke event.

The Olympic champion led from start to finish as she finished ahead of Australia’s Jenna Strauch. South Africa’s Kaylene Corbett finished in third place as South Africa won gold and bronze in the race.

The duo's success wasn’t the only medals that Team SA won on the day. Earlier Chad le Clos bagged a silver medal for the country.

Le Clos won silver in the final of the Men’s 200 Butterfly. Le Clos led the final for 150 metres and looked destined to grab the gold.

Sadly he was denied on the final lap as he was pipped at the finish by Lewis Clareburt from New Zealand. England’s James Guy, who looked likely to challenge Le Clos for the win, eventually finished in third place.

Lara Van Niekerk and Pieter Coetzé grab double gold for Team South Africa at Commonwealth Games in Birmingham

Team South Africa have their first medals of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in South Africa.

SA’s Lara Van Niekerk and Pieter Coetzé grabbed the golds in the swimming pool to get the country onto the medal board.

Van Niekerk won her gold by breaking the 50-metre Commonwealth record in the breaststroke for the third time, eNCA reported. She set a time of 29.73 seconds as she beat England's Imogen Louise Clark to take first place.

Africa took centre stage at the opening ceremony of the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games, being held in Birmingham - England.

This year's edition features all 72 Commonwealth Games Association which includes 19 African countries.

The 22nd edition of the competition officially kicked off on July 28 following a colourful opening ceremony spiced with the vivid and vibrant colour and culture of the African participants.
