Africa took centre stage at the opening ceremony of the 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games, being held in Birmingham - England.

This year's edition features all 72 Commonwealth Games Association which includes 19 African countries.

The 22nd edition of the competition officially kicked off on July 28 following a colourful opening ceremony spiced with the vivid and vibrant colour and culture of the African participants.

Ghana, South Africa, Uganda, Kenya and the other participants from the continent graced the opening ceremony with their glamorous culture laced, stealing the show at the grand opening ceremony held on Thursday, July 28.

South Africa leads the continent with the highest number of athletes (228) participating in Birmingham 2022 followed by Ghana with a contingent of 101 with Nigeria coming in third with 94 athletes.

Africa would hope her amazing display of beautiful colours will translate on the medal table.

What is the Commonwealth Games?

The Commonwealth Games also known as Friendly Games is a multi-sport international competition among athletes from the Commonwealth Nations - countries colonized by Great Britain.

The multi-sport competition takes place every four years with certain nations invited to take part.

Ghana takes centres stage with immaculate culture display at 2022 Commonwealth Games

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Ghana's team at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games stole the show at the opening ceremony with a colourful entry.

The athletes cladded in their traditional kente apparel arrived in a glamourous display of culture and dance.

In a video posted on social media, the Ghanaian team got the biggest applause as the red, gold, green and black flag was hoisted by the leader of the contingent.
