Super Eagles forward Odion Ighalo has been recognised following his impressive performance in the Saudi Professional Football League last season.

The 33-year-old scored 24 goals last season to emerge the highest scorer as he also inspired Al Hilal to win the league title.

He has been named in the Saudi Professional League team of the season having featured for Al-Shabab in the earlier half of the campaign.

The former Manchester United striker scored twice in Al-Hilal’s final league game of the season as they defeated Al-Faisaly 2-1 to win the title.

It was Ighalo’s first since he started playing professional football 17 years ago.

His teammate, Salem Al Dawsari was also included in the Team of the Season. Egypt and former West Bromwich Albion defender Ahmed Hegazi were also included in the squad.

The forward who grew up in the Ajegunle area of Lagos began his professional career at Prime FC of Osun State in 2005 and then moved to Julius Berger FC the following year.

Ighalo moved to Europe in 2007, where he joined Norwegian outfit, Lyn, as he also played for clubs in China as well as England.

"Delighted over his first-ever career title", the 33-year-old wrote on Instagram.

Ighalo recalls life in the dreadful slums of Ajegunle

Meanwhile, Nigerian international Odion Ighalo has expressed fulfilment after growing up in the slums of Ajegunle, a densely populated suburb in Lagos State.

‘AJ City’ as the area is fondly called is a neighbourhood located in the heart of Lagos and despite that the place is synonymous with several social vices, it has produced some of the very best individuals from Nigeria.

Despite being regarded as home to some of the poorest, Ajegunle has so far produced some of Nigeria’s finest musicians, tech experts, actors and what have you.

Osimhen scores in Napoli’s 10-0 win over Anaune

Sports Brief earlier reported that Nigerian international Victor Osimhen was on target in Napoli’s 10-0 thrashing of minnows Anaune in a friendly match on Thursday.

The 23-year-old came on as a substitute to score his side’s sixth goal which came minutes after his effort rattled came off the crossbar.

Matteo Politano and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia grabbed a brace each in the preseason game as Hirving Lozano, Alessio Zerbin, Amir Rrahmani and ZamboAndre Anguissa also found the back of the net.
