In the hours leading up to the squad announcement, Australia manager Arnold reportedly spoke to the youngster three times in a last-ditch attempt to get him to play for the nation.

Mourinho weighed in on the saga, as he criticized the manner in which Arnold was handling the situation.

'I think it is a personal decision and the club has not been involved,' The Roma boss said, via FoxSports.

'As a coach, for example, I would refuse to call up a player, even a young one, in a situation like that.

Mourinho went on to say Volpato was at a development phase of his career, and ‘he has to focus on building his future and not on certain decisions where maybe someone else wants to accelerate a process that should not be sped up.'
