Senegalese midfielder, Idrissa Gana Gueye, has shared his excitement after Everton ended a 14-year winless home run against Merseyside rivals Liverpool on Wednesday in the Premier League.

A goal on either side of the half from Jarrad Branthwaite and Dominic Calvert-Lewin dealt Liverpool's title ambition a huge blow while Everton seemingly tore away from the drop zone.

Gueye, one of the experienced players in the Everton team, played a pivotal role in the victory at Goodison Park last night.

"14 years... sorry for the wait," he wrote on X, formerly Twitter at the end of the match.

The win sees the Toffees go eight points clear of the drop zone with four matches remaining to end the season.

The last time Everton defeated the Reds in the Premier League at home was in October 2010, with Tim Cahill and Mikel Arteta on target, as reported by The Guardian.

“To give the people that, it’s pleasing for all of us. You know what it’s like. The news changes quickly. A few weeks ago, people were saying: ‘Do they care?’ They care. We care. There are no two ways about that, and I think we made that clear as a collective," said Everton manager Sean Dyche after the game.
“Another clean sheet, as well, so I’m pleased with that. A couple of really big saves from Jordan. We get a little bit lucky with the one that hits the inside of the post, but we’ve created enough chances ourselves."

Gueye has been outstanding for Everton this season, making 21 appearances and scoring two goals for the club.

Everton dents Liverpool's title ambition

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Liverpool's title bid suffered a blow after suffering a 2-0 defeat to Everton in the Merseyside derby.

Jurgen Klopp, who will be leaving at the end of the season, lost his last derby at Goodison Park while handing the advantage to Manchester City and Arsenal in the Premier League race.

Jarrad Branthwaite put Everton ahead in the 27th minute as the defender prodded the ball under Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker via the post after the Reds made a hash of clearing a free-kick.
