The fixture was originally set to take place over the weekend but had to be called off due to a waterlogged pitch. The Brazilians went into the game on the back of a flu outbreak at the club’s headquarters but still managed to field a strong side.

Thwili Thwala went into the game looking to secure second place in the league and the final CAF Champions League qualifying spot. MaMkhize’s side had more shots in the first half (5) as compared to the champions Mamelodi Sundowns (1).

Sundowns one shot in the first half also happened to be their goal. Sphelele Mkhulise put in a long-range cross towards the back post. Sirino found the back of the net in style as he beautiful cushioned the ball into the goal. The Uruguayan didn’t try to blast it but merely guided it past Hugo Nyame.

Royal AM had their chances to equalize, but Mxolisi Macuphu and Victor Letsoalo could not make the most of the possession.

Sundowns took control of the second half four minutes into it as they doubled their lead. Sirino was in the thick of the action again as he produced a beautiful ball to Kutumela. The forward guided the ball back across the goal face and into the corner of the net. Royal AM almost pulled one back before the hour mark when Mfundo Thikazi fired a shot across the goal and just wide.

Neo Maema then almost added a third for Downs when he smashed his shot against the goalpost. It was three not long after as Peter Shalulile finally got onto the scoresheet. Maema produced a brilliant through ball, which found Teboho Mokoena. Mokoena could have easily scored but unselfishly fed Shalulile, who scored his 23rd goal of the season.

Victor Letsoalo had the chance to grab a goal as he was brought down in the box by Grant Kekana.

The forward tried an audacious finish which was then brilliantly saved by Kennedy Mweene in goal. Letsoalo would eventually pull one back when he struck in the 69th minute of the game.

Shalulile almost got his 24th goal of the season minutes later, but the ball was fed just too far ahead of him.

Royal AM then made the finish a bit more nervy as Shaune Mogaila grabbed a second goal in the 76th minute. Mogaila fired the ball into the roof of the net from after a scramble in the box from a corner.

Royal AM continued to push forward in search of an equalizer and Letsoalo almost got it in the 80th minute. His shot went just wide.

Sundowns held on during the frenetic last ten minutes to claim victory and the three points.
