  • Readers have reacted with anger to the allegations levelled against Barcelona and Cameroon great Samuel Eto'o
  • Eto'o, president of the Cameroon Football Association, has been accused of evading taxes by the Spanish tax office
  • Commentators believe that these allegations are motivated by Eto'o insisting and ensuring that the 2021 African Cup of Nations held in Cameroon would go ahead

Readers are not happy about the allegations levelled against legendary former Barcelona and Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o.

Eto'o, now president of the Cameroon Football Association, was one of thousands of people accused of evading the taxman in Spain. This was on a list compiled by the Spanish tax office stating that the individuals on it owed €600,000 (R10.7 million) or more.

As reported by Sports Brief, Eto'o had also been accused of conspiring to evade €3.9 million (R69.2 million) in taxes owed on income from his image rights when he played for FC Barcelona from 2004 to 2009. He has yet to comment on the latest accusation.

Either way, readers reacted with outrage to the news.

Sylvester Mupupfuri said:

"Where have they been? Bitter and angry just that he vowed to see AFCON go as planned in January? Why "unearthing " it now! Spanish, my foot!"

Jacqueline King said:

"Lies! Lie! ! All of this to discredit all his achievements!"

Prince Maposa said:

"Why today? The problem is their system which sees evasion years after the player has resigned. When was the last time Eto'o kicked a ball in Spain? Foolish people!"

"He's not the first and probably not the last. There are many celebrities who are charged with tax evasion."

Ashaan Sambo said:

"Tax man ya Spain... it's mediocrity that is working there. How come it's come out now? Useless taxman."

Aluta Lekhuleni said:

"Madness! He must not back down. AFCON must continue as per the schedule."

Thabang Cass said:

"Why, sadly, have they come up with stories like this after he was rewarded to be the president of the Cameroon Football Association"
