Jose Mourinho surprisingly left out Germany as he named the three teams he believes are firm favourites to win the Euro 2024.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea boss has been without work since leaving AS Roma in January but retains a respected opinion.

Since his departure from the Italian club, the Portuguese tactician has been biding his time as he awaits his next coaching job.

He has reportedly rejected several offers, including the chance to become the Canadian national team manager.

For now, Mourinho has been making appearances as a pundit to provide his expert takes on football matters.

Recently, Vila do Conde asked the 61-year-old to predict the upcoming European Championships, and he had three nations in mind as favourites.

"For me, it’s one of the three strongest teams - Portugal, France, and England," Mourinho said, per Metro.

However, Mourinho did not rule out the possibility of an underdog pulling off a surprise at the tournament.

"Surprises can happen, yes. But looking at the quality and quantity of players, I think Portugal has to go there to win."

Mourinho’s picks for the favourites are fully justified as he picked one team that made the final of the last edition of the Euros (England).

His other pick, France, is one of the strongest footballing nations in the world. It boasts a star-studded squad that includes Ballon d’Or contender, Kylian Mbappe, and according to FIFA's latest rankings, Les Blues are ranked second in the world, behind Argentina.

The tactician might have had a pinch of bias in picking his country of birth, Portugal, but the Selecao are no pushovers, and they proved it with an unlikely victory in the 2016 edition of the competition. Portugal also boasts a potent squad that includes five-time Ballon d'Or winner, Cristiano Ronaldo.

Euro 2024 start date and location

This year’s edition of the European championships will take place in Germany. It will kick off on June 14 and run until July 14.

Italy are the defending champions, having won the 2020 edition at the expense of the Three Lions of England.

Euro 2024 qualified teams

Sports Brief also previously reported on all the qualifying nations for Euro 2024 after the play-off stage concluded.

Poland was among the last teams to qualify after beating Wales 5-4 in a penalty shootout in their play-off match.

Ukraine also secured a late ticket to Group E of this year's Euros after beating Iceland 2-1 in their play-off final.
