Ukraine vs. Iceland Preview

Form Guide

Ukraine are unbeaten in their last four matches, recording three wins and a draw during that period. They are coming off a come-from-behind 2-1 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina on Thursday night to book their place in the final.

They looked like they were headed for an early exit after Bosnia opened the scoring in the 56th minute through an own goal by Mykola Matviienko. There's no quit with Ukraine, though, who scored twice late to pull off a remarkable victory.

Roman Yaremchuk equalised for the visitors in the 85th minute before Artem Dovbyk headed in the match-winner in the 88th minute.

Iceland, on the other hand, have won their last three matches, including the 4-1 win over Israel in the Euro 2024 play-off semi-final.

They turned things around after Israel opened the scoring in the first half through an Eran Zahavi penalty, netting four unanswered goals.

Iceland survived a late scare when Israel were given a penalty late in the second half. Zahavi missed the spot kick, however, that would have tied the match at 2-2.

Iceland scored two late goals to make it 4-1 and seal their spot in the play-off final.

Recent Head-to-Head Matchups

Ukraine and Iceland have faced each other four times before, with both countries having similar 1-2-1 records in those matchups, per Soccerway.

Iceland defeated Ukraine the last time they squared off on September 6, 2017, in a FIFA World Cup qualifier. Gylfi Sigurdsson starred for Iceland in the 2-0 win, scoring a brace in the second half.

Team News

One guy who's expected to start for Iceland in the play-off final is Albert Gudmundsson. He was exceptional in the match against Israel, scoring a hat-trick in the Euro 2024 play-off semis, per ESPN.

For Ukraine, it will be interesting to see if Yaremchuk earns a start in the play-off final.

He provided the spark off the bench when he came on as a substitute in the 81st minute. He scored the equaliser in the 85th minute and provided the cross to Dovbyk moments later that netted them the match-winner against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Writer's Prediction

Ukraine edge past Iceland to qualify for Euro 2024.
