  • Arsenal will face Porto later tonight in the Champions League
  • The Gunners will try to overturn a first-leg 1-0 loss in Portugal
  • The Londoners have not reached the quarter-final since 2010

Arsenal will face FC Porto later tonight in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 at the Emirates Stadium for a chance to reach the quarter-final.

Porto won the first leg at the death thanks to a brilliant strike from Galeno in the 94th minute, which caught David Raya off guard and made the task more difficult for his team.

This game is of great importance to Mikel Arteta's team. Per Opta Analyst, they have lost nine out of 10 times when they lost the first leg of a knockout in the competition; their only win was against Porto in 2010 at the same stage.

Per Transfermarkt, the Gunners last played in the quarter-final of the Champions League in the 2009/10 season, where they were eliminated 6-3 on aggregate by Barcelona.

Sports Brief looks at how they have performed in their last seven knockout games in their first appearance after a seven-year absence.

Arsenal's last 7 UCL R16 performance

1. 2017 Vs Bayern Munich

This match sent the team on a UCL hiatus under Arsene Wenger. Bayern Munich beat them 10-2 on aggregate, 5-1 each, at the Allianz Arena and Emirates Stadium. Arteta was their first manager in seven years to coach a game in the competition.

2. 2016 Vs Barcelona

Barcelona and Bayern Munich were the usual nemesis for the Gunners in the competition. They have faced both four times each in the knockout since 2000. La Blaugrana eliminated the North London side 5-1 on aggregate in 2016. Lionel Messi scored three of the five goals.

3. 2015 Vs Monaco

It was the closest they came to reaching the quarter-final. Per Eurosport, they faced a difficult task of becoming the first side since Ajax in 1969 to progress after a two-goal deficit at home. They won 2-0 in France, but a 3-1 loss at the Emirates sent them packing on away goals.

4. 2014 Vs Bayern Munich

Arsenal are their own biggest problems with their performances in the first leg, which makes it difficult to overturn it in the second leg. The Gunners lost the first leg 2-0 at the Emirates and battled hard for a 1-1 draw at the Allianz, but it was not enough.

5. 2013 Vs Bayern Munich

Another year, the London side was undone in the first leg, with a 3-1 loss at home against the Bavarian Giants. Though they fought back with a 2-0 win in Germany, they were eliminated on away goal rules.

6. 2012 Vs AC Milan

Again and again, the Gunners were finished in the first leg. They lost 4-0 to AC Milan at San Siro in 2012. It was a mission impossible to overturn, and even though they won 3-0, it was not enough to secure progression.

7. 2011 Vs Barcelona

It was certain that losing the first leg did not help but winning it did not help either. Arsenal won the first leg 2-1 against Barcelona but collapsed to a 3-1 loss in the second leg.

Arteta called Messi Arsenal's obstacle

Sports Brief reported on Arteta calling Messi Arsenal's obstacle when he was quizzed about how the failures of the past years could affect his current group of players.

The manager labelled the former Barcelona man, who scored nine goals against the team, as a factor in their failure, noting that Bayern added to the misery.
