Arsenal vs. Bayern Munich KO round matches

2004-05 (Round of 16)

Arsenal and Bayern first met in the knockout stage of the Champions League in the 2004-05 season.

They were paired together in the Round of 16 after the Gunners finished top of Group E, and the German club came in second in Group C.

Bayern Munich gained the early advantage, winning the first leg 3-1. Claudio Pizarro scored a brace, netting goals in the fourth and 58th minutes. Hasan Salihamidzic then made it 3-0 with a strike in the 64th minute.

Kolo Toure gave Arsenal a lifeline, scoring a critical away goal in the 88th minute.

The Gunners headed into the second leg at Highbury knowing that a 2-0 win would be enough to see them through to the next round.

Thierry Henry made things interesting, hitting a powerful strike past Oliver Kahn in the 65th minute to give Arsenal a 1-0 lead. Unfortunately for the Gunners and their fans, they weren't able to find that second goal as Bayern held on for a 3-2 aggregate win.

2012-13 (Round of 16)

Arsenal and Bayern Munich faced each other in the Round of 16 of the Champions League once again in the 2012-13 season.

Just like in their previous meeting in the 2004-05 season, it was Bayern who drew first blood. They won 3-1 in the first leg, this time pulling off the victory at Arsenal's home field.

Not many gave the Gunners a chance in the second leg, with Bayern already having three away goals in the tie. There's no quit with Arsenal, though, as they came out firing at Allianz Arena.

Olivier Giroud pulled a goal back for the Gunners with a strike in the third minute. Laurent Koscielny scored a header five minutes from time to give Arsenal a 2-0 lead.

Their comeback fell short, though, as the match finished 3-3 on aggregate. Bayern Munich advanced to the quarter-finals via the away goals rule.

2013-14 (Round of 16)

Arsenal and Bayern Munich can't stop facing each other in the Round of 16 of the Champions League as their paths crossed again in the 2013-14 season.

The Gunners hosted the German side in the first leg, looking to gain an early advantage in the tie. That didn't materialise as Bayern recorded a 2-0 win at the Emirates Stadium.

The Bavarian giants took full advantage of Koscielny being sent off in the 37th minute. Toni Kroos opened the scoring against 10-man Arsenal in the 54th minute before Thomas Muller doubled their advantage in the 88th minute, per UEFA.com.

Bayern made it 3-0 on aggregate in the second leg after Bastian Schweinsteiger scored a goal in the 55th minute. Lukas Podolski pulled a goal back in the 57th minute, but that was the only strike they could muster over the two legs.

The tie finished 3-1 on aggregate in favour of Bayern as they eliminated Arsenal once more.

2016-17 (Round of 16)

Another Round of 16 matchup transpired between the two European giants in the 2016-17 Champions League season.

It wasn't close this time around, with Bayern Munich crushing Arsenal in each of their two meetings.

The Bavarian giants won 10-2 on aggregate, recording a pair of 5-1 wins over the Gunners. It was the biggest aggregate loss by an English club in the UEFA Champions League, per Eurosport.

Muller issues challenge to Havertz

Sports Brief recently reported on Muller's reaction to Bayern drawing Arsenal in the Champions League quarters.

He issued a challenge to his friend, Kai Havertz after the draw was announced.

The Gunners are back in the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2010.
