Asisat Lamina Oshoala was born into a polygamous Muslim family of one father and two wives. Her parents, Alhaji Oshoala (dad) and Iya Asisa (mum), were shopkeepers and lived in a middle-class community. Asisat Oshoala's parents did not support her soccer talent, especially when she quit school to pursue a football career.

Despite society's belief that playing football was unsuitable for girls, Oshoala's late grandmother believed in her. She would often talk to her parents whenever they chased her out of the house or denied food for playing soccer.

Club career history

Asisat began her career with Nigerian clubs Rivers Angels and FC Robo. She joined Liverpool in England's Women's Super League in 2015. She made a total of nine appearances and scored three goals.

In January 2016, Liverpool reported that a transfer bid from Arsenal triggered the release clause in Oshoala's contract and that she was talking with the London club about personal terms.

She joined Arsenal in March 2016 and assisted the club in winning the 2016 FA Women's Cup Final on May 14. Oshoala appeared in 13 games for the club in 2016 and scored two goals.

Oshoala joined FC Barcelona Femení on loan until the end of the season on January 31, 2019. Her full transfer to the club (and extension until 2022) was announced on May 31, 2019.

International career history

Her debut in the senior side of Super Falcons (Nigeria women's national football team) was in September 2013 during a friendly defeat by world champions Japan. The following year, Oshoala was named the best player and top goal scorer at the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, with seven goals.

When the Super Falcons won the 2014 African Women's Championship, Asitat was named best player and second top goal scorer of the tournament. On 8 June 2015, she scored her first 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup goal, enabling Nigeria to attain a 3 – 3 draw with Sweden in Winnipeg.

Oshoala was part of the Super Falcons squad that won the African Women's Championship in 2016 and 2018. She also scored three goals in the 2018 Edition in Ghana and vice-captained the teams at the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup in France.
