  • Victor Osimhen is likely to miss Nigeria's crucial semifinal tie
  • According to NFF, the striker is down with abdominal discomfort
  • Despite scoring just one goal at the AFCON, he's important to the team

The news on Victor Osimhen's current health issue has sent shockwaves through social media, sparking widespread concern about his potential absence in Nigeria's AFCON semifinal against South Africa.

The 25-year-old striker did not join the rest of the squad on their journey to Bouaké on Monday evening as the Super Eagles continued their preparations for the upcoming clash with the Bafana Bafana on Wednesday, February 7.

According to an official press release from Nigeria's national team's Twitter handle (now known as X), Osimhen's absence from the team's travel stemmed from abdominal discomfort.

While the announcement hints at the possibility of his absence in the crucial game, it also assures that the "team medics confirmed that he had been placed under close watch, with a member of the medical team staying behind in Abidjan with him."

This unforeseen development has triggered a significant reaction among football enthusiasts, particularly Nigerians, who are anxious about Osimhen's absence, considering his pivotal role in the team's journey to the semifinals.

Despite not finding the net in four of Nigeria's five games at the AFCON, the lanky striker remains a crucial element in Jose Peseiro's tactical strategy, and his potential absence leaves a substantial void, even with alternative options like Kelechi Iheanacho and Paul Onuachu available.

How fans reacted to Osimhen's potential absence

@Damilarewise waxed spiritual about Osimhen's injury concern:

"We rebuke the devil in Jesus' name. Osimhen will be fit by His grace. Amen!"

@flowzkinothing, on the other hand, appeared apprehensive with his message:

"Nothing must happen to Osimhen. Oh, please make sure our starboy is fit."

Another user, @Engr_Aro, suggested the reigning African Footballer of the Year might have been attacked by 'black magic':

"Small play south Africans use jazz for the boy."

@MD_Oluwafemi took a positive perspective and even wished the Super Eagles striker a speedy recovery:

"Get well soon, Osimhen. Good success in the next match, Team Eagles."

Interestingly, a user, @Crownprince_Com, already gave up, suggesting Bafana Bafana will beat Nigeria:

"South Africa will win against Super Eagles."

South Africa coach Broos praises Nigeria star

Sports Brief also reported that Bafana Bafana's coach, Hugo Broos, has lauded Ademola Lookman as a standout performer from the Super Eagles while expressing optimism about his team's chances of reaching the final.

The Belgian tactician's praise for the 26-year-old resonates globally, acknowledging the Napoli forward's impressive contributions as Nigeria's most potent attacker in the tournament, with three goals and an assist in five appearances.

Despite the presence of Osimhen in the team, it is Lookman who has taken on the goal-scoring responsibility at the AFCON as the West African giants chase a fourth continental title.
