Ironically, it was Liverpool who began the heavyweight clash on a flying note, with Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah giving the home side what looked like a comfortable 2-0 lead.

But Vinicius Junior ensured Madrid were level at halftime with two goals in a space of 15 minutes, per Daily Mail.

Defender Eder Militao then put Los Blancos in front for the first time in the game when he nodded home from a freekick two minutes after recess.

From there, it was the Karim Benzema show as the 35-year-old stretched the lead for the visitors before putting the icing on the cake with an impressive finish.

According to Opta, Benzema becomes the oldest visiting player to score against Liverpool at Anfield in a major European competition (35 years, 46 days old).

Here is the video of Benzema's ice-cold goal:

Real Madrid smash sorry Liverpool

Vinicius Junior and Karim Benzema scored twice as Real Madrid produced another stunning Champions League fightback from 2-0 down to thrash Liverpool 5-2 in the first leg of their last 16 tie at Anfield on Tuesday.

Darwin Nunez and Mohamed Salah had given the hosts a perfect start in a repeat of last season's Champions League final.

But Vinicius struck twice to level by half-time. After Eder Militao had given Carlo Ancelotti's men the lead, Benzema's double put the holders well on the way to the quarterfinals.

Benzema surpasses Raul

Sports Brief earlier reported that Karim Benzema can't stop scoring for Real Madrid. The French attacker grabbed his 10th and 11th goals of the season against Elche and made a little history in the process.

While Benzema's brace took him into Madrid's second spot, it also saw him enter into the top five of La Liga's all-time goal-scoring charts.

Benzema has now surpassed Raul on the club's all-time goalscoring list in La Liga.
