  • Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez has been benched for Aston Villa game against Tottenham
  • Unai Emery was tight-lipped on whether the World Cup winner will start against Tottenham
  • Uncertainties continues to surround his future at the Premier League club

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez helped Argentina to their third international trophy in 18 months by winning the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.

He returned to his club in England after an extended period of post World Cup break and head coach Unai Emery has not revealed when the goalkeeper will return to action.

The former Arsenal goalkeeper has now started his first match back at the club on the bench, after line-ups were confirmed for the game against Tottenham as Robin Olsen starts instead.

What Emery said on Martinez

Unai Emery, as quoted by All Football speaking after the game against Liverpool which Villa lost 3-1 said the 30 year old has to be ready physically and mentally before he can start games for the club.

‘He is going to be available physically and his mentality we are going to check. Hopefully he is coming 100 percent focused on Aston Villa. Of course he needs to adapt quickly again in our work. When Emiliano is coming back (he has) to adapt again in a new way with us.’ he said

The Argentine's career has taken an upward turn since replacing Bernd Leno in the Arsenal goal after the German was injured by Neal Maupay in a match against Brighton.

He has won three trophies for his country Argentina after that, including Copa America and World Cup and sealed a move away from Arsenal after a dispute with Mikel Arteta over his role in the team.

Emery reveals Villa transfer plans

Sports Brief earlier reported that Unai Emery confirmed Villa will be involved in the transfer market in January, as he expects departures and new arrivals.

Shockingly, goalkeeper Emi Martinez could be one of those who would depart after reports the former Arsenal employees are not fans of each other.

Bayern Munich could be his likely destination as the Bavarians are looking to replace aged veteran Manuel Neuer.
