  • Kylian Mbappe was eligible to play for Cameroon where his father hails from
  • The super striker decided to play for the French team as he was born in Paris
  • Samuel Eto’o once said he doesn't like born-abroad players representing Cameroon

Despite being eligible to play for Cameroon, the country of his father's origin, Kylian Mbappe opted to play for France, his own country of birth.

The Paris Saint-Germain star was born in Paris to a Cameroonian father and an Algerian mother, but he decided to feature for the European nation.

His father, Wilfried once disclosed that he had wanted his son to play for the Central African nation, but an official had demanded money.

And then, in 2017, Mbappe was called up to the French national team. He formed part of the squad that won the 2018 FIFA World Cup in France, scoring four goals, including one in the final.

However, FECAFOOT president Samuel Eto’o once suggested that he does not want players who are born abroad - like Mbappe - to represent the national team.

What did Eto’o say?

Speaking at the National Day of Diasporas and Africa (JNDA) in France, where he was invited as a guest speaker in March, Eto’o said via SNL24:

"I do not want to have a Kylian Mbappé who was born in Bordeaux in our national team, but to make Kylian Mbappés who were born in our working-class neighborhoods in Cameroon, because there are talents in our territories to be valued."

Eto'o's ideas about football in Cameroon were described as 'just one of the ways to reduce these insignificant happenings in Africa'.

The former Barcelona striker indirectly stated that more interest should be given to players who hailed from a country who represent that same country.

Mbappe’s father speaks

Sports Brief earlier reported that the father of France striker Kylian Mbappe has narrated all that transpired, forcing his son to play for Les Blues rather than Cameroon.

Mbappe, whose father is from Cameroon and mother is Algerian, had made efforts to play senior national team football for the Central African country.

However, Wilfried alleged that in 2018, a member of the Cameroon FA requested a bribe before Mbappe would be allowed into the Indomitable Lions’ squad.
