Ten Hag instead opted for the trio of Antony, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford to lead the goal hunt against the reigning English champions.

However, the Dutchman's game plan did not go according to plan, with City putting four goals past the Red Devils in the first 45 minutes.

Erik ten Hag explains Ronaldo snub at the Etihad Stadium

With United in dire need of more firepower upfront, many had hoped ten Hag would introduce Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, the Red Devils boss overlooked the veteran striker and instead brought on Anthony Martial, who has been out injured for weeks.

The Frenchman managed to justify his introduction as he netted a brace, including a penalty at the death to ensure the tie ended 6-3.

Speaking on his decision not to sub on Ronaldo, ten Hag said it was out of respect for the Portuguese talisman.

"I would not bring him in out of respect for Cristiano, for his big career," the ex-Ajax tactician explained via ESPN.

Pep Guardiola's past comments on Cristiano Ronaldo resurface

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola has previously lavished praise on Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ahead of the first Manchester derby of the season, with the two sides to lock horns on Sunday at the Etihad Stadium, Guardiola's previous comments on Ronaldo have resurfaced.

Ronaldo is currently under fire after putting in a lethargic show against Spain in the UEFA Nations League. He has been dropped by Erik ten Hag this season from league matches.
