He participated in youth hockey with the Atlantic Youth Hockey League's Long Island Gulls. Later, during the 2014–16 season, he joined the US National Team Development Program. He was selected for the 2016 U-18 World Hockey Championships Media All-Star Team and the 2016 IIHF World U-18 Best Defenceman teams.

He participated in collegiate hockey for the Harvard Crimson men's ice hockey team during the 2016–17 years. After his first year, he was named the 2017 ECAC Rookie of the Year and Ivy League Rookie of the Year. In 29 games during his sophomore season, he accrued 28 points (6 goals, 22 assists).
