Commonwealth Games: Nigerian Weightlifter Osijo Mary Wins Bronze Medal in the Women’s 87kg Event

Team Nigeria has taken their number of medals at the ongoing Commonwealth Games in Birmingham to eight.

On Tuesday night, Osijo Mary won a bronze medal in the women’s Weightlifting 87kg event after lifting a total of 236kg to finish in third place.

The 25-year-old weightlifter was beaten to gold and silver by Australian Eileen Cikamatana and Kristel Ngarlem of Canada, respectively.

Earlier in the day, Taiwo Laidi won silver in weightlifting in the women's 76kg event, which is impressive, Daily Post reports.

Nigeria are currently 10th on the medals’ table with 3 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze.

Kola Daniel, the special assistant to the Minister for Youth and Sports, Sunday Dare, disclosed that Nigeria will get more medals before the end of the games.

He told Sports Brief:

"Taiwo has done well, and we are all happy about the silver medal she has just won. We are still hoping that Nigeria will get more medals before the end of this game.
"The Honourable Minister is on ground and he is moving around to boost the morale of all athletes at the Commonwealth games.”

More medals for team South Africa

Meanwhile, South Africa's swimmers once again dominated in the swimming pool on Day 5.

Team SA grabbed gold, silver, and bronze thanks to Lara van Niekerk, Tatjana Schoenmaker, and Pieter Coetzé.

Van Niekerk stole the show in the Women’s 100m Breaststroke event as she beat her teammate, Schoenmaker, to the gold medal.

Australia's Chelsea Hodges bagged a bronze as the South Africans dominated.

Tunji Disu wins silver in US Judo Championships

Sports Brief earlier reported that the deputy commissioner of police and head of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT), Tunji Disu, has won a silver medal at the 2022 US Open judo championships.

It was gathered that the police boss participated in the minus 100kg category of the veteran division and made a podium finish on Sunday.

Disu became interested in Judo in 1986, and in 1990, he clinched two gold medals at the national sports festival in Bauchi.
