The Nigeria Football Federation is racing against time to name a new coach for the Super Eagles as the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers is around the corner.

The AFCON qualifiers kick-off in June and barely three weeks before the first game, the Super Eagles of Nigeria are without a coach.

It was gathered that members of the NFF recently had a meeting with the Ministry of Sports and plans are underway to conduct interviews with prospective candidates for the vacant Super Eagles coaching role.

A statement by the NFF claims interviews will begin in earnest and a coach will be named at the end of the process.

The NFF said as per Soccernet:

“Meeting between Sports Ministry and NFF went very well, both bodies agreeing to work together in the interest of Nigerian football.
“NFF will take the next few days to conduct further interviews with the prospective coaches/candidates seeking to become the Super Eagles Technical Adviser.
“Thereafter NFF will meet with the Ministry to reach a final decision on the matter.
“Key Performance Indicators, (KPIs)are to be fully worked out and put in place before a new national coach is hired.”

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles will take on Mexico and Ecuador in friendly games in the United States and will face Sierra Leone at the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.

The Nigerian assistants of the coach to be appointed are already set with Salisu Yusuf, Finidi George and Usman Abdallah all appointed.

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Ike Shorunmu was also appointed the goalkeepers’ trainer.

FIFA orders NFF to pay Rohr all outstanding salaries

Sports Brief earlier reported that the Nigeria Football Federation has been ordered to pay the sum of $1,045,000 (about N 433,873,550.00) to German coach Gernot Rohr with immediate effect.

Rohr was sacked by the Nigerian football house on the eve of the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations and he left the country unceremoniously.

A close associate of the Franco-German tactician disclosed that FIFA stated that Nigeria had no justifiable claim to fire the coach in December.

Gernot Rohr had dragged the NFF to the world governing body, FIFA, over allegations of a breach of contract.
