  • Bad day for Brian Onyango and Joash Onyango as their clubs get eliminated from CAF competitions
  • Brian Onyango's goal was not enough to keep Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League
  • Joseph Okumu features for KAA Gent as Marcelo's side keeps winning

Kenyan internationals Brian Onyango and Joash Onyango crashed out of CAF interclub competitions yesterday. Mandela’s Mamelodi Sundowns were knocked out by Petro Atletico while Onyango’s Simba SC were eliminated by Orlando Pirates.

Mamelodi Sundowns were hoping to overturn a 2-1 deficit against Petro Atletico in the CAF Champions League quarterfinals. Mandela pounced on a spill by the goalkeeper to put the South Africans in the driving seat. Moments later, Tiago Azulao equalized for the Angolans from the penalty spot to take them through on a 3-2 aggregate score.

In the CAF Confederations Cup, Simba SC were carrying a slender 1-0 lead from the first leg. Joash Onyango was in the heart of the defence after sitting out of the reverse fixture due to suspension.

Orlando Pirates forced the game into post-match penalties after Kwame Preprah rose highest to head home the equalizer in the second half. The Buccaneers goalkeeper Richard Ofori was the hero of the shootout. The Ghanaian saved one and scored the winning penalty to take the Pirates to the semifinals.

Orlando Pirates will now face Al Ahly Tripoli, while Petro Atletico will take on Wydad Casablanca in the semifinals.

Marcelo's side win second successive game

In Sweden, Eric ‘Marcelo’ Ouma’s club AIK, picked up three crucial points and a clean sheet. AIK beat Djurgarden 1-0 in the Stockholm derby. Argentinian Nicolas Stefanelli scored the only goal of the game to take AIK to fourth position.

In Belgium, defender Joseph Okumu made a comeback from injury as his Gent side went 1-0 down to Genk. Belgium teams are currently in the play-off matches to determine who will qualify for the Europa Conference League preliminary stages.

Okumu, replaced Jordan Torunarigha, but his presence was not enough to help his side start their campaign on a winning note. Hungarian Andras Nemeth came off the bench to score the winner in stoppage time. Gent will face Charleroi in the next round before taking on KV Mechelen.

Kibunguchy misses out on his team's emphatic victory

Sports Brief previously reported that Nabilai Kibunguchy had made his long-awaited debut for Minnesota United. He was however missing in the match day squad in the subsequent game as Minnesota United ran out 3-0 victors against Chicago Fire.

Michael Olunga’s Al Duhail also qualified for the knockout stages of the AFC Champions League. Al Duhail came from behind to beat Al Tawoon 4-3 to qualify for the next stage with one game to spare.
