  • Former football star Jermaine Pennant recently narrated how he lost his football earnings of more than £10million
  • The former Liverpool winger reportedly got into so much financial trouble that he forgot he owned a house
  • He also blew his money on “bad investments” and fell prey to ‘vultures’ who targeted him for his fortune

Former Liverpool star Jermaine Pennant recently narrated how being financially illiterate cost him his career earnings.

The 39-year-old, who played for Arsenal, Liverpool and Birmingham in a career spanning 18 years, was declared bankrupt early in 2023.

His life as a professional footballer was that of the typical lad who landed on riches as it involved fast cars, exotic holidays and splashing hundreds of thousands on luxury items.

Pennant, whose name started to grow because of his stint at Arsenal, owned a fleet of cars in his heyday, including a Ferrari F430, an Aston Martin DB9, a Lamborghini, a Porsche GTS and several Range Rovers, as per The Mirror.

He would also take exotic trips to the Maldives, Dubai and Seychelles, but all that seems to be a thing of the past now.

Did we mention he once splashed a whopping £25,000 on a bar bill in Las Vegas?

“Financially illiterate”

In an interview with The Sun, Pennant was the first to admit that perhaps he was “financially illiterate”.

Not only did he blow his money on luxury items and trips, he was also guilty of making some very bad investments and trusting people who were only out to fleece him of his wealth.

“I have made so many mistakes but I did not know how to deal with things and would not think of the consequences of my actions.” He said.

“I have been labelled a bad-boy but, in reality, I was just an insecure kid who did not know what he was doing.”

A disorder known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, which Pennant was diagnosed with last year, affected him to the point he forgot he owned a house in Cheshire.

The major wake-up call for Pennant came in 2018, when he was slapped with a bill of £1million by the taxman.

And with debts of more than £1million, he was declared bankrupt in 2023.

Pique hits back at Shakira

In other news, Gerard Pique appeared to hit back at Shakira after the Barcelona legend’s estranged ex released a diss track on him.

Shakira and Pique, who recently announced his retirement from football, broke up in June 2022 after the former Barcelona defender was reportedly caught cheating.

Since their separation, Shakira’s music has included references to Pique, but never as blatant as her latest release with Argentine producer Bizarrap.

According to Barca Universal, Pique appeared in a King's League stream on Friday, where he gave a response to Shakira for his 7-a-side league which he is president of.
