Rally career (1986 - 2001)

The Italian-born F1 icon began his motorsport career as a mechanic in Belgium for the Mazda Rally Championships from 1986 to 1988. In an interview with Motorsport, he recounted his early career.

I started in 1986 as a mechanic in rallying. I left my homeplace, I went from Italy to Belgium, because I liked racing cars, and for me that was a starting point. From there, I did various technical positions.

Steiner returned to his homeplace in Italy as an assistant team manager for Top Run Srl in January 1989. He later joined Milan's Jolly Club Spa and was promoted to technical manager in 1994.

He moved to the UK in 1996 to join Prodrive as the team manager for its Allstar Rally Team before joining M-Sport as the project manager for the team's Ford Focus rally car. He later got promoted to director of engineering, helping the team secure consecutive runner-up finishes in the 2000 and 2001 seasons.

Formula One (2001-2024)

Jaguar Racing (2001-2003)

Red Bull Racing (2005–2008)

Austrian energy drink firm Red Bull bought the Jaguar F1 team from US car giant Ford in November 2004. Following the move, Red Bull appointed Steiner their technical operations director in 2005.

Guenther moved to the US, where he served as Team Red Bull's technical director from 2006 to 2008. He helped establish Red Bull's NASCAR team there before leaving them in April 2008.

Hass F1 (2014-2024)

Steiner joined the Hass F1 team on 14 April 2014 as its principal. The team's founder, Gene Haas, contacted Steiner to build the team from scratch. Guenther led the team to its F1 debut in 2016, securing points in its first race.

Guenther transformed Hass into a competitive side and produced some of the best F1 drivers. According to the Athletic, the team's best finish under Guenther was fifth in the 2018 F1 Championship. In January 2024, Haas announced their decision to terminate his contract.
