AFCON 2021: Ghana forward Benjamin Tetteh banned for three matches

• Ghanaian forward Benjamin Tetteh has been suspended for three games after receiving a red card in the game against Gabon
• The lanky forward was banned for attacking a Gabonese player at the end of the second group C game on Tuesday
• Tetteh will miss Tuesday's game against Comoros and could only return if Ghana reaches the semi final

The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) has banned Black Stars forward Benjamin Tetteh for three matches following his role in the melee that ensued after the Ghana versus Gabon game.

The Ghana forward attacked a Gabonese player right at the end of the match, starting the scuffles that marred an intense encounter.

In a statement from the CAF's disciplinary committee, the player will first face an automatic two match ban before an addition one game suspension for indiscipline.

The statement on CAF's website reads: "The CAF Disciplinary Board held a meeting this morning to deliberate on a number of incidents that occurred at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021.

On 13 January 2022, Gabon played Ghana at Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaounde. Cameroon. The match officials indicated in their report that at the final whistle, Ghana player Benjamin Tetteh allegedly assaulted a Gabonese player.

CAF Disciplinary Board decided to:

To suspend player Ghana player Benjamin Tetteh for one additional game match in addition to his automatic suspension of two matches. Consequently, the player has been suspended for three matches.

The Disciplinary Board has also issued a stern warning to both teams for their unsportsmanship behaviour after referees’ full time whistle."

The Black Stars have been reduced to only two strikers, with Jordan Ayew and Richmond Boakye Yiadom to rely on.

Ghana needs victory against Comoros in the final group game to stand a chance of progressing to the last 16.

"Well, it's unfortunate that the player had to react the way he did. But that's the punishment you get for misconduct. The boys are looking beyond that and want to make sure they get to the stage where Tetteh can play again," he told SportsBrief.com from his base in Yaounde.

Benjamin Tetteh sees red after punching a Gabonese player

Earlier, SportsBrief.com reported that, Ghana's second group C game against Gabon ended in ugly scenes after striker Benjamin Tetteh was red carded for starting what will end up in a brawl between the two sides.

Benjamin Tetteh, right at the blow of the final whistle rushed onto a Gabon player to punch him, leading to scuffles, with security having to come protect the officials.

Referee Lahlou Benbraham had to order Arsenal star Thomas Partey to go bring out Tetteh, who had fled the scene after instigating the fight. Read more:
