  • South Africa's men's national team has got to qualify for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast
  • South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan has made this abundantly clear to Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos
  • The team last qualified for a major tournament in the 2019 edition that was hosted by Egypt

Hugo Broos has got to take Bafana Bafana to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast.

South African Football Association president Danny Jordaan had the formidable Morocco - in South Africa's qualifiers group alongside Liberia - in mind about the task at hand in getting to West Africa next January.

According to the Sunday World, Jordaan said:

“We have given the coach a lot of friendly matches to prepare, otherwise it would have been about nine months without a match. So, there is no excuse. After Afcon, we will start with the 2026 Fifa World Cup qualifiers for the tournament that will be co-hosted by the US, Mexico and Canada.

“If you look back, you must remember that the Fifa men’s and women’s World Cups in 2018 and 2019 were not good for African teams but the debate has now shifted after the recent World Cup in Qatar after Morocco made history by reaching the semi-finals. Now there will be a lot of interest in African teams and we need to be there and to take part."

Gaston Sirino could become a Bafana Bafana player in the near future.

You read that correctly. The Uruguayan joined Mamelodi Sundowns in January 2018 and will have lived in the country for five years in the new year.

As reported by iDiski Times, this will make him eligible for South African citizenship. More importantly, this would make him eligible to play for Bafana Bafana.

Motsepe 'saddened' by Bafana mediocrity

Bafana Bafana's mediocrity has not been lost on CAF president Patrice Motsepe.

The South African has expressed sadness over his compatriots' poor state and worsening state over the years.

Bafana Bafana last qualified organically for a FIFA World Cup tournament in 2002, while also qualifying by virtue of being hosts in 2010.

They've also struggled to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations, last doing so in 2019.
