Arsenal's hopes of doing a league and continental double were dashed last night after they were eliminated from the UEFA Europa League by Portuguese opposition, Sporting Lisbon.

The two teams played to a 2-2 draw in Lisbon last week and ended the return leg 1-1 in London before heading to extra time, which the visitors subsequently won at the Emirates Stadium after a shootout.

The Gunners' Brazilian winger, Gabriel Martinelli missed the penalty that ultimately handed victory to Sporting but his Arsenal teammates are rallying to support him.

Speaking to BT Sports after the game, as quoted by Metro UK, the skipper had a message of support for Martinelli.

‘‘We win and lose together. It doesn’t matter. When we’re winning everyone is happy; when we lose, we have to pick up the spirit. We win and lose together."
Odegaard added, ‘‘We have to remember it’s been a great season, It’s a big blow to go out of this competition but now we look forward to the league; that’s all we can do now."

According to data provided by the Premier League official website, the Brazilian has scored 12 goals and provided two assists in 27 league games for Mikel Arteta's team, which has proven pivotal to their title chase.

Xhaka dedicates goal to daughter

Sports Brief also reported on Arsenal vice-captain, Granit Xhaka performing a special celebration and dedicating his opening goal to his daughter.

His wife, Leonita revealed in two Instagram story posts during the game that the Swiss international had promised to score for their little girl.

The celebration was replicated and mocked by Sporting's goal-scorer, Pedro Goncalves, who trolled the Arsenal star after the final whistle.
