  • Arsenal have been dumped out of the UEFA Europa League by Sporting CP on penalties
  • Granit Xhaka put the Gunners ahead in the first half before Pedro Goncalves equalised with an outrageous goal
  • The Swiss international dedicated his strike to his daughter Ayana whom he had promised earlier

Arsenal bowed out of the UEFA Europa League in the round of 16 after losing 5-3 to Sporting CP on penalties when both teams could not be separated following a 3-3 aggregate score.

The first leg in Lisbon ended 2-2. Granit Xhaka opened the scoring in the 19th minute, and things appeared to be going in the Gunners' way before an outrageous strike from Pedro Goncalves levelled it up midway through the second half.

Brazilian winger Gabriel Martinelli missed his spot-kick, and Sporting scored all five of theirs to send the Premier League leaders out of Europe's secondary competition.

Xhaka dedicates goal to daughter

Swiss midfielder Xhaka, who scored the opening goal, dedicated the goal to his daughter Ayana whom he had earlier promised to score a goal, as revealed by his wife on Instagram.

The Arsenal vice-captain is one of the players who has rediscovered form and turned his career around under Mikel Arteta and is leading their title chase, as reported by Football London.

Goncalves trolls Xhaka

As reported by Metro UK, Xhaka's celebration for his daughter was copied and mocked by Sporting star and goal scorer Pedro Goncalves after the shootout.

The Portuguese club players ran to the away end to celebrate with their travelling fans, and Goncalves was seen mimicking the celebration to troll the eliminated Gunners.

Georgina remembers her late son

As someone is dedicating a goal to his daughter, another is reliving the death of her infant son. Cristiano Ronaldo and Georgina Rodriguez lost one of their twins last year.

Georgina broke down in tears reliving the experience, as earlier reported by Sports Brief. She was due for a twin, but only the female survived while the son tragically passed.

The aftermath of how Manchester United handled the incident was part of what Ronaldo noted in his interview, which consequently led to his departure from Old Trafford.
