Ghana's representation in the UEFA Champions League has been short-circuited with the exit of Ajax Amsterdam at the knockout phase.

With three Ghanaians featuring at the start of the competition, Mohammed Kudus was the last man hoisting the flag of Ghana in the prestigious tournament.

But a stunning away win at the Johan Cruijff Arena by two-time winners Benfica ensured Ghana no longer has a representative in the Champions League as the tournament enters the quarterfinal stages.

Kudus' Ajax posted a 2-2 scoreline in the first leg at the Estadio da Luz and returning to their fortress, they were expected to knick a win but the Portuguese had other ideas as they pipped the Dutch champions in their own backyard.

How many Ghanaians featured in the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League

Three Ghanaian players played in this season's Champions League.

Edmund Addo and his Moldovan club Sheriff Tiraspol made their debut this season but caused a massive stir with their shock win against Real Madrid at the fabled Santiago Bernabeu. Despite their heroic efforts, Addo's side was booted out of the elite European club competition at the group stages.

The same applies to tricky winger Kamal Sowah who is currently on loan at AZ Alkmaar from Belgian side Club Brugge. Sowah shone for Brugge however, their efforts were woefully inadequate as they finished bottom of Group A.

Meanwhile, former FC Nordsjaelland talisman Mohammed Kudus completes the Ghanaian trident that participated in the Champions League. Although he didn't play a huge chunk of Ajax's journey to the knockout phase primarily to niggling injuries, he was the last Ghanaian standing until last night's exit. Kudus played a total of 23 minutes in the Amsterdam club's route to the Round of 16.

Kudus plays a bit-part role in dramatic win for Ajax

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Ghana international Mohammed Kudus played a bit-part role for Ajax as the Amsterdam-based club recorded a 3-2 win against Cambuur.

Goals from Ivorian striker Sebastian Haller and skipper Dusan Tadic were neutralized by strikes from Sierra Leone international Issa Kallon and Patrick Joosten.

However, Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch had the last laugh as he put a dagger in the heart of the home side as Ajax claimed the maximum three points at stake.
