Euro 2024 Group A Preview

Germany

Best finish: Champions 1972, 1980 (both as West Germany), 1996

Euro 2020: Round of 16

Things are moving in the right direction for Germany ahead of the 2024 European Championship.

Julian Nagelsmann's men won their friendly matches against powerhouse teams France and the Netherlands last March, giving home fans confidence that they could end their 28-year title drought at the Euros.

Their chances of lifting the trophy were given a major boost after Toni Kroos announced that he would be returning from international retirement to play for Germany one last time.

Kroos showed he is still one of the best midfielders in the world, helping Real Madrid win the La Liga and the Champions League in the 2023-24 season.

Scotland

Best finish: Group stage (1992, 1996, 2020)

Euro 2020: Group stage

The Scots are flying high under manager Steve Clarke. They finished second in Group A behind Spain to qualify directly for a major final for the first time since 1998.

Clarke made history with Scotland's Euro 2024 qualification, becoming the first manager to lead the nation to back-to-back appearances in the European Championships.

He will hope that Scotland will fare much better this time around. They finished bottom of Group D at Euro 2020 after recording just one point in their matches. They lost to Croatia and the Czech Republic and drew 0-0 with England.

Scott McTominay will need to continue his excellent play for the national team for Scotland to reach the knockout round of the Euros for the first time in their history.

He bagged the 2023 Men's Player of the Year award for Scotland after scoring seven goals in qualifying.

Switzerland

Best finish: Quarter-finals (2020)

Euro 2020: Quarter-finals

Murat Yakin has been working wonders for Switzerland ever since he became their coach in 2021. He led Nati to the Round of 16 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where they reached the knockout round for a fifth consecutive major tournament.

The goal now for Yakin and the Swiss is to improve on their showing at Euro 2020. They came close to reaching the semi-finals of that tournament, losing 3-1 on penalties to Spain in the last 8.

One guy who needs to play well for Switzerland at Euro 2024 is Zeki Amdouni. He led the team in scoring in Euro qualifying, netting six goals for the Swiss.

All eyes will be on Granit Xhaka as well after the Switzerland captain led Bayer Leverkusen to a league and cup double in Germany this past season.

Hungary

Best finish: Third place (1964)

Euro 2020: Group stage

There's no hotter team among the Euro 2024 finalists than Hungary. They are unbeaten in their last 14 matches, with their last defeat coming against Italy at home in the Nations League in September 2022.

That is their longest unbeaten stretch since the Mighty Magyars went undefeated for 18 matches between July 1954 and February 1956 during the Ferenc Puskás era.

Hungary directly qualified for Euro 2024 after topping Group G with 18 points.

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai and Barnabas Varga starred for Hungary in their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign, netting four goals each to lead the team in scoring.

Szoboszlai made 45 appearances for the Reds in the 2023-24 season, scoring seven goals.

Players to watch at Euro 2024

Sports Brief also recently reported on the five players to watch at Euro 2024.

Jude Bellingham topped the list after leading Real Madrid to a trophy double.

He will look to take England to the top in this year's European Championship.
