The 2023/24 DStv Premiership is in the final stretch, and a few things are still up for grabs.

The Golden Boot race is far from done, with several players in contention. Last season's winner, Khanyisa Mayo, is looking to defend his title, but Iqraam Rayners' five-goal display has made things more exciting.

Mayo and Mamelodi Sundowns star, Peter Shalulile, shared the Golden Boot award last season after they scored 12 goals each. This season, the leader has scored 14 goals.

The Masandawana veteran has just six goals this season and will unlikely make it three PSL top scorer prizes. Sports Brief looks at five who could claim that honour this season.

2023/24 DStv Premiership top scorers

5. Bradley Grobler - 9 goals

The veteran SuperSport United striker is playing in his 17th season in the PSL and has bagged nine goals this campaign. Last season, he scored ten goals. He will need to score more to match his best tally. Grobler's best season came in the 202/21 season, where he scored 16 goals. He won the Golden Boot that season.

He has scored against the top three teams, Orlando Pirates, Sundowns and Stellenbosch. At 36, he has shown he can still hang with the best.

4. Khanyisa Mayo - 10 goals

Mayo will need to work harder to defend his crown. The Cape Town City star has bagged 10 goals with four matches to go. Mayo has struggled in 2024 with three goals in 10 matches. Coincidentally, despite a strong finish last year, his team has not won a league match in 2024.

Mayo will need top performances in the remaining games to retain his crown.

3. Lucas Riberio - 11 goals

The Brazilian is having a tremendous first season in the DStv Premiership. He has scored 11 goals in 15 matches, an impressive return for a player still settling in African football. His latest score came in Sundowns' demolition of Kaizer Chiefs on Thursday, May 2, to claim the title ahead of time.

Ribeiro's numbers would be more impressive if he played more games. The 25-year-old has scored five goals in 2024, despite missing seven matches.

2. Tshegofatso Mabasa - 13 goals

Mabasa was on his way out of Orlando Pirates a few seasons ago, and this season, he has become one of Buccaneer's best players. Mabasa was on loan at Moroka Swallows for the first half of the season and scored six goals in 13 PSL matches.

He has bagged seven in nine appearances for Pirates, who are have a superb run of form. Jose Riveiro's side have won five league matches in a row, scoring 18 goals and conceding three. Mabasa's seven goals for Pirates this season have come in the last six games. If this form continues, no one can stop him from getting his hands on the Golden Boot.

1. Iqraam Rayners - 14 goals

Rayners joined Stellies in January 2023 and has done incredibly well. Last season, he scored nine goals in 10 matches. This campaign, he has surpassed that mark. He has 14 goals in 24 games.

The 28-year-old started the season slow but bounced back impressively in a Stellenbosch shirt. Five of his goals came in their clash against Polokwane City, where he scored all five goals, and they won 5-0.

Rayners' form coincides with Stellenbosch's impressive run of form. They are currently on a 25-match unbeaten run. They last tasted defeat in September 2023. Rayners is in a great position to win his first Golden Boot.

Riveiro lauds Mabasa

Sports Brief earlier reported on Pirates coach, Jose Riveiro, praising Mabasa amid his superb run of form.

The Bucs boss highlighted his star's goal-scoring prowess and ability to impact the game without scoring.
