Finidi George's appointment as Nigeria's head coach has not gone down well with everyone.

The 53-year-old was appointed as the new Super Eagles coach this week, officially taking over from José Peseiro.

Finidi George's appointment has raised eyebrows with some fans of the Super Eagles.

As noted by Daily Post Nigeria, George has been Peseiro's assistant for the past 20 months and was also interim boss of the national side after the Portuguese national left.

While some believe the former Nigerian international is more than capable of leading the team, others have found reasons to criticise his appointment.

Fans dig up George's old Pepe video

One reason is George's interaction with Portugal's Pepe and Super Eagles star, Moses Simon, in 2022.

Supporters were quick to find the video of the then-assistant coach seemingly upset that his player had asked for Pepe's jersey after the game.

Portugal beat Nigeria 4-0 in the friendly just before the World Cup, and many believed that George was upset because his players were more worried about getting jerseys.

Other reports suggested that his son was a Real Madrid fan, so he was upset that Simon beat him to get the defender's top.

Whatever the reason, some supporters don't think he should be leading the team if he was upset with his own players over the top.

Felix Onuoha:

"We lost 4-0, and what was more important to him was a jersey."

Prince Edan:

"Not just dragging for Jersey, this same guy already don get issues with some of the big names in the team, so appointing this guy, I can tell you is a big mistake....I don't think players like Eberechi Eze, Tosun, etc will like to play under him. I actually don't see any technicalities in this head😂😂"

@DangoMmanu:

"Our people are too greedy (lack of contentment); how can a match official want Jersey exchange? An ex-player interfering. This happens in every aspect of the country."

Details missing from Finidi George’s contract

Sports Brief reported how the Nigeria Football Federation, (NFF), had appointed George as coach of the Super Eagles, but left out some details during that announcement.

The former Nigerian international worked as an assistant under Jose Peseiro at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast and is also an ex-Nigerian international star.

With the former Real Betis player taking up the post, some noticed that the NFF didn’t disclose specific details, like the actual length of the 53-year-old’s contract.
