Things are going from bad to worse for Liverpool.

The Reds' Premier League title hopes took a huge hit on Wednesday after losing 2-0 to Everton in their showdown at Goodison Park.

Manager Jurgen Klopp took responsibility for the loss, apologising to the Liverpool fans following the gut-wrenching defeat.

Klopp says sorry to fans after loss

Klopp addressed the fans in a post-match interview, saying, “I really feel for the people. I am really sorry for that.”

He added that people had often told them what a great record they had in the derby and that they had never lost here before.

Unfortunately for them, their unbeaten run at Goodison Park came to an end on Wednesday, with Liverpool tasting their first defeat at Everton's home ground since 2010.

Klopp said that the loss "was unnecessary, but it happened," per The Athletic.

They got off to a terrible start against the Toffees, conceding the opening goal in the 27th minute.

Jarrad Branthwaite struck from close range to give Everton a 1-0 lead in the first half. Dominic Calvert-Lewin doubled Everton's lead just before the hour mark, scoring a towering header in the 58th minute.

Liverpool's title hopes hanging in the balance

The feeling among Liverpool players and fans after the loss is that they may have blown their chance to win the Premier League title for the first time since 2020.

The Reds trail leaders Arsenal by three points with four matches remaining in their Premier League schedule.

The Gunners also have a superior goal difference compared to the Reds, meaning Liverpool have to score four more points than Arsenal in their remaining matches to finish above them.

Manchester City trail Liverpool by a point in the standings, but the defending champions have two games in hand.

Everton fans make fun of Liverpool's collapse

Sports Brief recently reported on Everton fans making fun of Liverpool's collapse.

The Toffees supporters chanted, " You lost the league at Goodison Park" during the closing stages of the match.

Everton went on to win 2-0 against their bitter rivals.
