  • Erik ten Hag could remain as Manchester United manager, but on one condition
  • There have been talks the manager could lose his job at the end of the season
  • If he stays at Old Trafford, Ten Hag’s control over transfers will reduce considerably

Erik ten Hag’s stay at Manchester United will come with a catch if latest reports are anything to go by.

The Dutchman faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford, mainly due to the club’s inconsistent performances this season.

Questions have been raised over United’s transfer business over the years, and Ten Hag has also had mixed fortunes in that department since taking charge of the club in 2022.

Some of his best signings at United have been Casemiro, Lisandro Martinez and young striker Rasmus Hojlund, although other stars brought in by the 54-year-old have struggled to make an impression, per Give me Sport.

Changes at Manchester United

According to The Mirror, the recent arrival of co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS colleagues is set to bring wholesome changes to United, and one of the biggest changes will be reducing Ten Hag’s influence in the club’s transfer activity.

United remain in talks with Newcastle over the appointment of technical director Dan Ashworth, while it also emerged on Monday that a formal approach had been made towards Southampton director of football Jason Wilcox.

Wilcox is renowned for spotting and developing talent, and his addition to the Manchester United hierarchy will come with a reduced say in United’s transfers for Ten Hag.

Ten Hag’s Man United future

Since Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s arrival, the United co-owner has never publicly backed Ten Hag, something that has led fans to believe that perhaps a sack is on the cards.

However, the United gaffer insists his vision for the club and that of INEOS remains the same.

"We have to perform together, because all of those players are very good signings. But playing for United is so different to playing for any other club,” he said in January.
“It's so much more difficult to play and perform for United, than at another club. So you need a very strong character to perform, to deal with the high expectations.”

What next for Man United?

As it stands, United’s only hope for silverware this season is the FA Cup.

In the Premier League, the Red Devils are chasing European places as they sit sixth on the log with 48 points, nine behind fifth-placed Tottenham Hotspur.

Ten Hag's next assignment is a tricky fixture against Chelsea on Thursday, April 4.

Chelsea vs Man United preview

The Chelsea and Manchester United matchup promises to be a thrilling encounter between two sleeping giants of the Premier League.

As Sports Brief reported, the Blues have won just one of their last four league matches, while United have dropped points in three of their last four league matches, absorbing two losses and one draw during that period.
