  • Grant Margeman has spoken about what transpired before he left Mamelodi Sundowns
  • The 25-year-old had spent a loan spell with DSTv Premiership side SuperSport United
  • Margeman hoped for a fresh start under coach Rulani Mokwena, but he was sidelined

Bafana Bafana midfielder, Grant Margeman, has shared his experience of leaving Mamelodi Sundowns after returning from a loan stint with SuperSport United.

Margeman, who joined Matsatsantsa permanently before the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season, had previously spent a loan spell with the club during the 2022/23 campaign.

The 25-year-old signed with Sundowns in 2020 from Ajax Cape Town, but his time with the club was frustrated, making only three appearances before being loaned out to Moroka Swallows.

Upon his return from SuperSport, Margeman hoped for a fresh start under coach Rulani Mokwena but was again sidelined.

“I never really spoke to coach Rulani when I came back from loan. I didn’t even train with the first team at Sundowns. I was training with the other guys coming from loans," he explained, as reported by Far Post.

Despite the setback at Sundowns, he has flourished at the Swanky Boys, making 28 appearances in the current season, with one goal and three assists. Moreover, his performances earned him a call-up to the national team. He played in two FIFA Series international friendlies, one against Andorra and the other against Algeria.

Hugo Broos introduced 10 new players into his 23-man South Africa squad. Three were yet to earn caps, as most were not part of the bronze-winning Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 team.

As reported by FIFA, the series' primary goal is to offer member associations increased playing opportunities, especially outside the traditional football powerhouses in Europe and South America. Furthermore, it aims to elevate the sport's competitiveness globally and foster football development across various continents.

Margeman enjoys AFCON Break at the beach

Sports Brief reported that Margeman took his son to the beach for his sixth birthday for the AFCON break

He was among the players left out of the final squad that jetted to Ivory Coast.

His hard work off the ball indicates Gavin Hunt's squad in PSL.
