  • Iqraam Rayner was called up for Hugo Broos' next Bafana Bafana squad
  • Stellenbosch FC are preparing for their Nedbank Cup tie with Milford FC
  • Steve Barker is wary of avoiding the same result that Kaizer Chiefs met

Iqraam Rayners could end this phase of domestic football on a high.

The pacey forward is expected to line up for Stellenbosch FC in their Nedbank Cup last 16 tie against the Kaizer Chiefs-slaying Milford FC.

Rayners has achieved his goal of being recalled to the national team by Hugo Broos and can possibly book himself a starting berth with a clinical performance for The Maroons.

The Bafana Bafana recall is the result of hard work put in since the resumption of the domestic season.

Rayners has just made his 100th DStv Premiership appearance, scoring his second goal of the year and eighth of the season in a draw against Cape Town Spurs. Elaborating on his call-up, IOL relayed him saying:

"It is always a good opportunity to play for the national team. I’ll keep on focusing and keep on doing my best, first at my team, and then focus on the national team."

Before leaving for Algeria for two internationals, Stellenbosch and their star forward must get past Milford FC, who are looking for another top-tier scalp.

Coach Steve Barker is adamant that they will not be caught off-guard, and will look to supply Rayners with the necessary ammunition. Barker explained via StellenboschFC:

"I believe people underestimate his goal-scoring record. When he gets chances, he inevitably converts, so it’s important for us that we have him in the right positions."

Playing at home, Stellies needed a penalty shootout to advance to the Round of 16 and may feel more comfortable away at the Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu on Friday night.

The Carling Knockout Cup winners lifted their first major trophy by taking the away route in every round.

Iqraam Rayners to force Broos' hand

Sports Brief previously reported on Rayners' determination to earn his way back into the Bafana Bafana squad.

Rayners made the AFCON standby list but remained at home to experience the bronze medal success from afar.

He has since helped Stellenbosch FC to within a win of taking hold of the second place in the DSTV Premiership.
