  • Matchday 30 of the Belgium Pro Jupiler League took place over the weekend
  • Three goalkeepers were injured in exactly the same minute during some of the games
  • The goalies strategically got injured to allow their teammates observing Ramadan to eat

In three out of four crucial matches in Belgian football, an interesting phenomenon occurred. Goalkeepers appeared to sustain injuries at precisely the same time, and it wasn't merely coincidental.

In fact, it was a clever tactic to assist players observing Ramadan, a month during which they cannot eat or drink until sunset.

What happened in the Belgium league?

Matchday 30 of the Belgium Pro Jupiler League unfolded across different venues over the weekend, per Soccerway.

However, an unexpected "injury wave" affected three goalkeepers simultaneously, indicating a non-random occurrence.

During the encounter between KAA Gent and Charleroi game, goalkeeper Hervé Koffi went down, apparently sustaining an injury.

During the Westerlo versus Racing Genk match, goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt sustained an injury and received medical attention on the pitch.

Adding to the situation at same exact minute, goalkeeper Tobe Leysen found himself on the field in pain as his OH Leuven team hosted Mechelen at King Power at Den Dreef Stadion.

Why did goalkeepers feign injuries?

According to Tribuna, it was an understanding among the players. Given that many in the league observe Ramadan, feigning injury around the 20th minute allowed them to pause and replenish once it was time to break their fast.

Unlike in England and the Netherlands, where referees can halt games during Ramadan, Belgium lacked such a rule. Therefore, players devised this solution independently to assist their teammates.
