  • The 63-year-old coach failed to find an agreement with the NFF on key salary terms

In the whirlwind of coaching transitions, Portuguese tactician, Jose Peseiro, has expressed interest in the prominent role at DStv Premiership side Kaizer Chiefs.

After steering the Super Eagles to the brink of glory in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the 63-year-old found himself at a crossroads.

Despite his commendable efforts, negotiations with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) hit an impasse over contractual terms, prompting the federation to cast its net wide for potential replacements.

Initially open to a reduced salary of $50,000 before AFCON, Peseiro found himself at odds with the federation's offer after the tournament in Ivory Coast.

As reported by Soccernet Nigeria, the seasoned manager has now set his sights on a managerial venture in South Africa, with Amakhosi emerging as a prime candidate.

The Portuguese’s distinguished track record hasn't gone unnoticed elsewhere, with rumours also swirling about interest from North African powerhouses Zamalek SC and the Algerian national team.

Despite his availability, the 63-year-old remains noncommittal about his next move, opting for a well-deserved break instead.

Spotted alongside his wife, Fatima, at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on March 6, the couple indulged in some football spectacle, watching Real Madrid clash with RB Leipzig in the UEFA Champions League.

Expressing his heartfelt appreciation for the unwavering support of Nigerians during his tenure, Peseiro urged fans to continue rallying behind the national team.

“I want to thank all Nigerians and the entire press for the interest, support, and encouragement given to the Super Eagles while I was their coach. I would like to ask all of you always to support your players,” said Peseiro, as quoted by his X handle.

NFF names candidates to replace Peseiro

Sports Brief reported that the NFF compiled a shortlist of two potential candidates to assume the reins.

According to the report, the Federation identified Emmanuel Amunike and Michael Nsien,

The choice of Amunike appears to resonate with many fans and stakeholders across the nation’s football community.
