  • Jose Peseiro’s immediate future has been a subject of enormous debate
  • The Portuguese recently led Nigeria to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations
  • The 63-year-old is poised to end his stint as coach of Nigeria, per a report

The immediate future of Jose Peseiro has been a subject of huge debate following his escapade at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Portuguese led a highly criticised Nigerian team to the final of the showpiece; however, they lost to a resurgent tournament host, Ivory Coast.

Following the conclusion of the biennial tournament, a flurry of reports have continued to pour in, highlighting a host of African countries and club sides fancy his services.

However, when quizzed about the immediate future, the former Sporting CP boss often responded by stressing the fact he was in talks with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over the potential of a contract extension.

Nonetheless, a report from media outlet OwnGoalNigeria has emerged stating the Portuguese has agreed to a contract with the Algerian Football Federation (FAF).

Peseiro to join Algeria?

The report highlights that the manager has long been on the radar of the 2019 AFCON winners. The resignation of coach, Djamel Behmadi, led to initial contact between both parties.

However, the Desert Foxes were initially inclined towards signing former Switzerland coach, Vladimir Petkovic, over Peseiro. Nevertheless, after the Bosnian coach failed to respond within the 48-hour window given for the contract offer, the FAF opted for Peseiro.

The report further emphasises that unless there is a sudden change in the agreed terms of the contract or unforeseeable circumstances, the Portuguese manager will be announced as the manager of the Algerian team in the first week of March.

It's worth noting that Peseiro's current contract with the Nigerian team ends on February 29, and the NFF is reportedly offering the 63-year-old the same terms for an extension as with his current deal.

Why Nigeria must retain Peseiro

Sports Brief in an earlier report outlined a few reasons why Nigeria should retain Peseiro.

The former Real Madrid assistant manager led Nigeria to its best finish at the AFCON since their 2013 triumph.

The Portuguese coach has effectively resolved the goalkeeping issues that have plagued the Nigerian team, with the emergence of Stanley Nwabali.
