Discussions on the pursuit of a suitable successor for the vacant Super Eagles coaching position continue to herald the Nigerian football community.

A plethora of renowned names have been consistently linked with the managerial role of the Nigerian team since the departure of former coach, Jose Peseiro.

While the possibility of Peseiro returning cannot be completely discounted, indications point towards a substantial disparity between the salary proposals from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and the expectations of the 63-year-old coach.

Amidst ongoing negotiations, a report from OwnGoalNigeria has disclosed that the NFF has compiled a shortlist of two potential candidates to assume the reins should an agreement not be reached with Peseiro for an extension of his tenure.

NFF options to replace Peseiro

According to the report, the Football Federation has identified Emmanuel Amunike, and Michael Nsien, as potential replacements for the former Sporting CP manager.

The choice of Amunike appears to resonate with many fans and stakeholders across the nation’s football community, given his immense record with the junior ranks of the Nigerian team.

The former Barcelona winger also served as the head coach of the Taifa Stars of Tanzania. Under his leadership, the team successfully secured qualification for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.

Michael Nsien, on the other hand, is a former Nigerian U-20 international and is currently the USA U-19 men's team coach.

The report also highlights that ex-players of the Super Eagles and a few stakeholders have thrown their support behind the appointment of Amunike. However, the current NFF president, Musa Gusau, is tilting towards the American-trained, Nsien.

Nonetheless, it concludes by stressing that these two would be viable options only if Peseiro fails to accept the current offer the NFF has proposed to him.

Foreign coaches that could replace Peseiro

Sports Brief in a previous report drew up a list of foreign coaches that could replace Peseiro.

The former Real Madrid assistant manager has not yet signed a contract extension with the NFF, leading to a flurry of managers being linked with the vacant role.
