  • Jose Peseiro's contract with the Nigerian national team expired at the end of February
  • Talk about a replacement for the departing Portuguese manager has taken centre stage
  • A group of former players have reportedly submitted a preferred candidate for the job

Talk regarding the future of the Super Eagles of Nigeria coaching role is dominating the country's football scenes, following the expiration of the contract of coach, Jose Peseiro.

The Portuguese tactician, who led Nigeria to their best finish at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) since the win in 2013, failed to reach an agreement with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) before the expiration of his contract.

However, while reports of negotiations are ongoing between both parties with regard to the possibility of penning a new deal, OwnGoalNigeria reports that select former players of the Super Eagles have submitted the names of their preferred candidates to take over from Peseiro.

Ex-Super Eagles players on vacant coaching role

According to the report, Austin Eguavoen - the current technical adviser of the Nigerian national team, Sunday Oliseh - a former Super Eagles coach, and Daniel Amokachi - a former assistant coach, have submitted their preferred choices for coach to the Minister of Sports, John Enoh.

The report also stated the trio had unanimously agreed on Emmanuel Amunike, with Amokachi also being nominated as his assistant.

It concluded by emphasising that the minister had agreed with their recommendation and had hinted at honouring their suggestion.

The selection of Amunike by the trio resonates with many stakeholders in Nigerian football, who believe that the 1994 AFCON winner possesses the qualities to lead Nigeria. He has previously recorded success in Nigeria's youth football setup, including winning the U17 FIFA World Cup in 2015.

The former Barcelona winger is also very familiar with many players in the current Super Eagles team, having coached them during their formative years.

NFF makes offer to Peseiro

Sports Brief also previously reported that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) have reportedly extended a contract offer to Peseiro after his contract expired last month.

The proposed contract is reportedly valued at around $80,000. However, the former Sporting CP tactician is said to be holding out for an offer of approximately $120,000.
