  • William Troost-Ekong is rooting for Jose Peseiro to retain the coaching job
  • The Portuguese tactician’s future as Nigeria’s head coach remains unclear
  • Peseiro guided the Super Eagles to a silver medal finish at the 2023 AFCON

William Troost-Ekong has stated he would be delighted to see Jose Peseiro continue as Super Eagles coach following the Nigerian national team's heroics at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 63-year-old tactician is currently out of contract with the Nigeria Football Federation after leading the Super Eagles to the silver medal at the just concluded AFCON in Ivory Coast.

According to All Nigeria Soccer, Ekong believes his teammates would also want Peseiro to continue his role as coach, as his latest achievement is something the team can build upon.

"Yes. I think the players are happy with him. Reaching the [AFCON] final is something significant and also something we can build on," the defender remarked.

Peseiro has been the Super Eagles coach since May 2022, with a record of 11 wins, four draws, and seven losses in his 22 total games as manager of the West African giants.

Algeria to decide Peseiro’s fate

Meanwhile, Walid Sadi, the new president of the Algeria Football Federation, will decide this week whether to move ahead with plans to make Peseiro the country's next coach, Daily Post reports.

Both Peseiro and Vladimir Petkovic have received offers from the Algeria Football Federation, with the Portuguese boss set for a massive pay increase - should he be chosen for the job.

Algeria is searching for a new coach to tinker the Desert Foxes following their poor display at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, where they crashed out in the group stage for a second straight time.

Hunt snubs Ekong as Nigeria’s best

Earlier, Sports Brief reported that SuperSport United coach, Gavin Hunt, believes Frank Onyeka was the standout performer for the Super Eagles at AFCON 2023, not Troost-Ekong.

The defender's commanding presence was instrumental as Nigeria went an impressive 490 minutes without conceding a single goal at the tournament hosted in Ivory Coast.

While the 30-year-old former Watford defender featured in all seven games for the Super Eagles, scoring three goals en route to the final, Hunt believes Onyeka was more important.
