He debuted at Sport Lisboa e Cartaxo in 1979 and ended up representing Amora FC, Clube Oriental de Lisboa, GD Samora Correia and SCU Torreense for five seasons. He retired from his playing career at the end of the 1993/94 season with União de Santarém.

The former player spent his first eight years as a coach in Portuguese football's third and fourth tiers. It was only a matter of time before he got appointed at CD Nacional, which he helped promote to the Primeira Liga in just three seasons.
