Senegal vs. Cameroon Group C Preview

Form Guide

The Teranga Lions head into this matchup boasting a rich vein of form. They have won four of their last five games, including a 3-0 victory over Gambia in their opening match at AFCON 2023.

Lamine Camara starred for Senegal in that contest, scoring a brace. Pape Gueye recorded the other goal, opening the scoring in the fourth minute.

The Indomitable Lions have struggled lately, recording just one win in their last five matches. They have drawn each of their last three games, including a 1-1 stalemate against Guinea in their Group C opener.

Head-to-Head Matchups

Senegal are unbeaten in their last four matches against Cameroon, recording two wins and two draws, including a 1-0 victory in a friendly last year.

Sadio Mane scored the game's lone goal in the 35th minute.

They last faced each other in the Africa Cup of Nations back in 2017 in the quarter-finals. Cameroon prevailed in that encounter, winning 5-4 in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

Senegal star, Mane missed his spot kick at 4-4 before Vincent Aboubakar scored the match-winning penalty for the Indomitable Lions, per The Guardian.

Team News

Andre Onana balancing his duties for Manchester United and Cameroon this month has been well documented. He is expected to make his much-anticipated AFCON 2023 debut for the Indomitable Lions today against Senegal.

He was not named in Cameroon's squad for their Group C opener against Guinea, a match which ended in a 1-1 draw. Head coach, Rigobert Song decided to drop Onana as he was coming off a long journey from England.

He played in Manchester United's Premier League game against Tottenham on January 14, just 24 hours before Cameroon's opening match at AFCON 2023.

Captain, Aboubakar also did not play in that match against Guinea after suffering a thigh injury on the eve of the competition, per ESPN. His status for the game against Senegal remains uncertain.

Pape Matar Sarr, who suffered an injury scare a couple of weeks before the AFCON, was an unused substitute in the win against Gambia. It will be interesting to see if the Tottenham midfielder will feature against Cameroon today.

Mane played the entire match against Gambia and he is expected to do the same in the game vs. Cameroon.
