The best midfielders often show their quality and importance to their team by contributing both on attack and defence in a consistent manner. La Liga midfielders often tend to be technically adept players, as the style of play in Spain involves lots of passing and movement.

Who are the 10 best La Liga midfielders in the league currently?

Elite midfielders in La Liga tend to play for teams in the top half of the table. Here are the top 10 best La Liga midfielders currently:

10. Martin Zubimendi (Real Sociedad)

Over the past two seasons, Zubimendi has established himself as one of the best Spanish La Liga midfielders. Playing as a deep-lying playmaker similar to Busquets or Rodri, Zubimendi has helped propel Real Sociedad to a Champions League position and has attracted the interest of Europe's elite clubs such as Barcelona, Manchester City and Arsenal.

9. Rodrigo De Paul (Atletico Madrid)

De Paul has had a great past 12 months, being a crucial part of Argentina's World Cup-winning squad and a machine in the heart of Atletico Madrid's midfield. Known for his flexibility and leadership, De Paul remains one of La Liga's most consistent players.

8. Brais Méndez (Real Sociedad)

Brais is one of La Liga's most exciting attacking midfielders. Initially starting at Celta Vigo, Méndez has played his best football after moving to Basque side Real Sociedad, leading them to a Copa Del Rey title and qualification to the Champions League.

7. Aurelien Tchouameni (Real Madrid)

Part of a young, exciting core of French La Liga midfielders, Tchouameni has had an astronomical rise from a young midfielder from Monaco to signing for Real Madrid to fill the shoes of veteran Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, who left the club. Aurelien combines his speed and technical ability with his physicality to dominate opposing midfielders.

6. Eduardo Camavinga (Real Madrid)

Just like his fellow Frenchman Tchouameni, Camavinga has made his impact felt in Spain with his dynamism and consistency. Initially signed as a central midfielder, Camavinga has played several other roles, including filling in at left-back and even as a winger on different occasions.

5. Federico Valverde (Real Madrid)

Affectionately called ' Fede' by the Madrid fans, Valverde has been part of Los Blancos' dominance in La Liga and the Champions League in the past few years. The Uruguayan can play a multitude of positions but has thrived in central midfield and out wide due to his power and pace. He famously gave the assist for Vinicius Junior's winning goal in the 2021/2022 UEFA Champions League final against Liverpool.

4. Pedri (Barcelona)

Pedro González López, alias Pedri, has been an inspirational force for Barcelona and Spain in the past two seasons, with brilliant displays in midfield that have seen him draw comparisons to Barca legends like Xavi and Iniesta. Still only 21, he is widely considered a player upon whom Barca will build their future. Pedri was the overall winner of the 2021 Golden Boy Award for the best young player in the world.

3. Gavi (Barcelona)

Another midfield player from the famed Barca youth system, Gavi, has been one of La Liga's best midfielders this season. The 19-year-old Spaniard has achieved rave reviews as he fits the perfect profile of a central midfielder. He is a recipient of the 2022 Golden Boy Award and the Kopa trophy from France Football.

However, fans will have to be patient if they want to see him on the pitch again. Gavi will unfortunately miss most of the remainder of the season after sustaining a ligament injury that required surgery and a lengthy rehabilitation process.

2. Antoine Griezmann (Atletico Madrid)

Nicknamed 'Grizou' by fans as a tribute to his similarity in playing position to French attacking midfield icon Zinedine ' Zizou' Zidane, Antoine Griezmann has proved to be one of the best midfielders of his generation. His ability to score goals, as well as his effort to help the team defend, has made him a fan favourite for both club and country. Antoine recently made history by matching Luis Aragones in becoming Atletico Madrid's top scorer of all time with 173 goals.

1. Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid)

When Real Madrid signed Jude Bellingham from Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund in the summer, there were already plenty of expectations heaped upon the shoulders of the young Englishman. However, no one expected him to become the team's best player immediately after the Englishman displayed his full array of talents, scoring 17 goals in the first 21 games of the 2023/24 season for Los Blancos.

Who is the best La Liga midfielder of all time?

Andrés Iniesta Luján is widely considered the best La Liga midfielder of all time. The Spaniard played in La Liga for sixteen years, building a dominant midfield trio with Sergio Busquets and current Barcelona boss Xavi Hernandez. He also featured prominently for Spain, winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Championships in 2012 and 2016. Iniesta is still an active football player, with his current club being Emirati FC in The United Arab Emirates (UAE) Pro League.
