Gymnastics has a background and history that hails from Greece and the military ranks. Therefore, it is no surprise to see a lot of the exercises have elements such as poles and horse saddle routines that underline the historical aspect of military fitness. How gymnastics equipment is used today mainly borrows from that early era.

Which are the most commonly used gymnastic equipment?

Different disciplines of gymnastics require different tools of trade. Some of the equipment is also divided based on gender, as there are specific men's and women's events. The following pieces of essential equipment are a mainstay in most areas where people practise gymnastics:

1. Balance Beam

It is a narrow, elongated beam typically measuring 4 inches wide and 16 feet long, elevated approximately 4 feet off the ground. Female gymnasts perform intricate routines comprising leaps, turns, acrobatic elements, and dismounts on the balance beam, showcasing precision, flexibility, and balance.

2. Vaulting Table

It consists of a padded table with a springboard, allowing gymnasts to generate power and momentum for their vault. Athletes sprint down a runway, plant their hands on the springboard, execute flips and twists in the air, and land on the other side of the vault. The vault is a dynamic and powerful element in artistic gymnastics.

3. Uneven Bars

Consists of two horizontal bars set at different heights, allowing for dynamic swinging and release movements. Female gymnasts perform routines on the uneven bars, showcasing a combination of swinging elements, transitional moves, and dismounts.

4. Parallel Bars

It is made out of two horizontal bars set parallel to each other, adjustable in height. Male gymnasts exhibit strength and coordination as they swing, balance, and perform intricate manoeuvres on the parallel bars.

5. Horizontal Bar (High Bar)

A single, elevated horizontal bar, usually made of metal and designed to support dynamic swinging elements. Male gymnasts showcase their strength and skill by performing complex releases, turns, and dismounts on the high bar.

5. Floor Exercise Mat

It is a sprung floor mat designed to provide extra bounce, often covered with carpet or a similar material. Gymnasts, both male and female, perform choreographed routines that combine tumbling passes, dance elements, and acrobatic skills on the floor exercise mat.

6. Pommel Horse

It consists of a padded, elongated apparatus with handles (pommels) on each end. Male gymnasts demonstrate their skills by performing circular and scissor-like movements on the pommel horse, requiring strength, flexibility, and precision.

7. Rings

As the name suggests, it is a pair of suspended rings, typically made of wood or metal. Male gymnasts perform strength-based elements and swinging movements on the rings, showcasing upper body strength and control.

8. Trampoline

A sturdy frame supporting a strong fabric stretched tightly over coiled springs. Trampoline gymnastics involves athletes bouncing on the trampoline bed to execute flips, twists, and somersaults, demonstrating aerial skills and body control.

9. Rhythmic Gymnastics Apparatus:

Hoop: A circular apparatus made of plastic or wood.

Ball: A small rubber ball.

Clubs: Pairs of cylindrical clubs made of wood or plastic.

Ribbon: A long, flowing ribbon attached to a handle.

Rope: A rope of specific length and material.

Rhythmic gymnasts incorporate these apparatus into routines, combining dance, flexibility, and skilful manipulation of the equipment to create visually captivating performances.

10. Mats and Padding

Mats and padding are strategically placed throughout the gymnastics training and competition area to ensure safety during landings and falls. They provide protection for gymnasts practising various skills and routines and also allow them to risk moves without fear.

Final Words

These essential pieces of gymnastics equipment collectively contribute to the diverse and dynamic nature of the sport, requiring athletes to master a combination of strength, flexibility, coordination, and artistic expression. These are the basics that you will find in every functional gymnastics training centre.
