Cole Palmer has a slim chance of being recognized as a Premier League winner if Manchester City secures an unprecedented fourth successive title on Sunday, May 19.

The Chelsea man has had an outstanding season since signing for the Blues for £40 million and was recently named the Premier League’s Young Player of the Season for the 2023/24 campaign.

It was a thoroughly deserved award for 22-year-old Palmer, who has netted an impressive 22 Premier League goals in 33 appearances and tallied 10 assists.

Chelsea are set to end their campaign without any silverware, but for Palmer, more glory could come his way.

How many medals do champions get?

Manchester City is on the verge of another Premier League title and could win it with a victory over West Ham United on Sunday, May 19.

According to Four Four Two, the champions will be accorded 40 medals by the Premier League.

Winners of the title are at liberty to distribute the medals as they see fit between the manager, players and officials.

Every player who has made five appearances in the title-winning season can receive a medal.

Can Palmer receive a medal?

Before his move to Chelsea, Palmer made two appearances as a Manchester City player, scoring in the Community Shield against Arsenal.

He also got 10 minutes against Burnley in City’s opening league game of the season, meaning he failed to reach the five-game threshold that would have made him eligible to receive a medal.

Another player who came agonizingly close to making five appearances for Manchester City was the embattled Kalvin Phillips, who was ultimately loaned out to West Ham after making four appearances for the Citizens.

However, a loophole still allows Palmer and Phillips to receive a medal.

What the rules say

According to Sporting News, the rules state that Premier League champions can request for more medals if more than 39 players have made more than five appearances this season.

City only has 29 players who meet this criteria, meaning that option is off the table.

The only way Palmer and Phillips can receive medals is if it comes at the expense of a member of the coaching and backroom staff.

Cole Palmer’s lock screen

Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported on Palmer’s ‘elite’ phone lock screen.

Hawk-eyed fans spotted the forward’s lock screen before Chelsea’s away game against Brighton on Wednesday, May 15, 2024.

The forward’s phone contained an image of an accolade he hopes to win this season.
