Diego Simeone has admitted Atletico Madrid are dark horses in the race for the 2023/24 La Liga title following their impressive victory against Rayo Vallecano on Monday night.

Los Rojiblancos had six different scorers as they white-washed their opponents 7-0 to make a statement of their ambition for this season under the Argentina manager.

According to Football Espana, Simeone has now revealed Barcelona and Real Madrid still remain the favourites to win the league at the end of the season as they remain the best two teams in Spain.

“I am not going to change for a game where we were especially effective. Madrid and Barcelona are better than the rest and we work to be there when they fail.”

Atletico Madrid have racked up a total of 11 La Liga titles in their history, but they sit third on the ranking in Spain behind Real Madrid and Barcelona, who both have 35 and 27 league titles, respectively.

Atletico secure biggest away win

Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid hammered city rivals Rayo Vallecano 7-0 in front of their home supporters for their biggest-ever away win in La Liga on Monday night, BBC reports.

The 11-time La Liga winners were 3-0 up inside 36 minutes as Antoine Griezmann, Memphis Depay and Nahuel Molina all got on the scoresheet for Diego Simeone’s side.

Four goals in 13 second-half minutes, then completed the rout with Alvaro Morata netting twice, alongside Angel Correa and Marcos Llorente grabbing a goal each.

Simeone rejects €40m Saudi offer

Earlier, Sports Brief reported Diego Simeone will not join the bandwagon heading to Saudi Arabia, at least not this summer, as he showed his loyalty to Atletico Madrid one more time.

The 53-year-old manager, who joined Rojiblancos in 2011, is ready to see out his contract with the La Liga club after extending his deal with the until 2024 when he signed an extra two-year deal.

Simeone has turned down a very lucrative offer from Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli and is now set to remain at Atletico Madrid for the 2023/24 season.
