  • Newcastle United scored five in the first half of their game against Tottenham
  • Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak scored braces while Joelinton also got on the scoresheet
  • Cristian Stellini reacted by substituting a midfielder for a defender

Newcastle United are cementing their top four status for next season after putting five unreplied goals past fellow top 4 contenders Tottenham Hotspur in the first half of their tie.

The Magpies raced to a 3-0 lead in the first nine minutes through a Jacob Murphy brace on either side of Joelinton's strike.

£68m striker from Real Sociedad, Alexander Isak scored twice in two minutes to round up a dominant first half display for the Toons and an embarrassing scoreline for Spurs.

The scoreline sparked a reaction from the Tottenham bench, with interim coach Cristian Stellini substituting midfielder Pape Matar Sarr for defender Davison Sanchez in the 23rd minute.

It also led to the withdrawal of goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris at halftime. He was replaced by English goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

It looks unlikely Spurs will bring out any element of surprise in their arsenal and the game can be called in favour of Eddie Howe's men.

Newcastle, if they can hold on will move into third place, sitting on the same point as Manchester United, who have played a game less but are not in action this weekend due to their FA Cup engagement with Brighton.

The Saudi PIF backed club will hope to finish the season on a high note by qualifying for next season's UEFA Champions League as they begin a new era under their new owners.

Manchester City were the last team to score five goals in the first half of a Premier League game, when they hit the future in 18 minutes in their 8-0 rout of Watford in 2019.
